Essential Oils to reduce stress and anxiety

Essential oils are plants that have been reduced down to a concentrate, otherwise known as the essence or soul of the plant. These oils are incredible as they can be used for a great range of different health issues and complaints.
Most modern medicine is derived from plants, so these raw plant essences are like nature’s medicine cabinet. I use them to help treat anything and everything from a cold to menstrual pain.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. You can diffuse them, apply them to the body via carrier oils, and directly inhale them. The oils have a direct Mind body connection, and stimulate the olfactory system (through which we smell through, which then has a direct connection with the limbic system (the system through which we process emotions). This is why smells can instantly take you back to a memory, quicker than any other sense. And this is why essential oils can be so powerful at affecting your mood and levels of stress and/or anxiety.

There are three types of essential oils that affect the body in different ways: Top, middle and base notes.
Top notes are good for a quick fix. They are light, quick and ideal for uplifting the mood. These are great for first thing in the morning, helping you get out of bed, or for diffusing into a work space to help stimulate your employees and refresh their minds. Middle notes are a little heavier and work on a deeper level of your being. And base notes work on the deepest aspect of our selves and are often the thickest or most viscose. You can also mix these different levels together and you get some wonderful blends to help reduce stress and anxiety. Enjoy!

*If applying oils to the body only ever use them diluted with a carrier oil and a couple of drops will usually be sufficient.

Best top notes for stress and anxiety:
•    Peppermint-helps to see things differently, quickly
•    Blood Orange –anti depressant, mood uplifting
•    Bergamont-calming and uplifting

It’s best to diffuse these smells or apply them (diluted with carrier oil) on the tips of toes and fingers, or on the upper aspect of the body.

Best Middle notes
•    Geranium –calming, softening
•    Roman Chamomille –calming, reassuring
•    Rosemary- confidence, focus, self belief
•    Lavender- calming, reassuring

Best Base Notes:
•    Frankincense –helps build a new mindset, strengthening, stabilizing
•    Sandalwood- Calms the mind, stops mind ruminating, grounding
•    Spikenard-almost a sedative it’s so calming and grounding
Best to use on the lower aspect of the body, feet ideally.
